My Project

Brooklyn Environmental Exploration School (MS664k) is a Title I School. The school's population are majority low-income families, single parent households, and many who live in shelters. There is minimal access to affordable health and wellness centers (gyms). Obesity, high-blood pressure, diabetes, as well as high cholesterol severely effect our school's neighborhood that are poverty stricken and unable to put their health first. According to stateofchildhoodobesity.org

"Roughly one in six youth have obesity, according to the newest available data.

The data, for the National Survey of Children's Health show that in 2021-2022 17% of youth ages 10-17 had obesity."

Lack of safe places to play, and lack of physical activity is the largest determining factor for whether a child is likely to become overweight or obese. Children living in poverty can have reduced access to opportunities for exercise. Sport clubs, and extracurricular activities are too often unaffordable.

Having a Health and Wellness program in school give students, families, and staff FREE access to exercise during the school day. Having the opportunity to exercise can potentially increase health lifestyles. Please help us create a wellness room!
