My Students

My students are from a large, urban community that is interconnected and socialized. They bring a special blend of cultural diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences, and pizzazz to our school. We are a Title I school in a low-income community; I have twenty-four vibrant students in my classroom with varying abilities and circumstances: temporary housing, doubled-up housing, and IEPs. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day, which are now remotely served.

My students are resilient, STRONG, and enthusiastic about learning.

The majority of my students read below grade level. They would benefit from a variety of classroom resources to help increase their success in our newly established distance remote learning platform. On March 13th, my students began full remote learning without warning or preparation. The remainder of the school year, the school building continued to be closed due to the COVID-19 virus. This presented several challenges but my students showed themselves mighty and were extremely resilient. There is a new road ahead with the start of a brand new school year which will look completely different with some students fully remote and some blended.

My Project

With all of the uncertainty that lies ahead, I want to be certain about the health and safety of my scholars. While more than half of my students will be fully remote, I have about 35% who will participate in blended learning. This means that they will come into the building, once or twice a week. Additionally, I will have a different cohort of students daily. That being said, disinfecting to protect must be my number one priority.

Learning and a valuable education matters; yet, it won't matter if my students become ill.

That said, I want to provide them with an air purifier to cleanse the air as we attend school in a very old building without any air conditioning. I would also like clorox in order to deep clean daily and prepare the classroom for the next cohort each day. Hand sanitizer will be used by the scholars often in order to fight off the germs. Lastly, the contact-less thermometer will help us to check the temperatures of our scholars without bombarding the nurse who will have a full plate.

I desperately want to make this school year unforgettable and provide a meaningful learning experience for my scholars. In order to do so, I must be able to keep them safe and protected.
