My Students

Our students DO mathematics in the classroom. To us, that means solving real problems and explaining the thinking behind strategies to each other. Real problems require real supplies.

JBS is a transfer high school.

This means that we accept students who, for a variety of reasons, were not successful in their previous high school. Many of our students have taken the same math class a few times and failed. Students feel unsuccessful at math and unsure of themselves in sharing answers. In our classrooms, students are encouraged to think creatively. Strategies, as opposed to answer-getting, are encouraged. Students have a voice as we design curriculum that meets their math needs and is relevant.

My Project

Students take the CUNY Placement Exam to determine whether or not they enter college courses or take non-credit, remedial courses. In Beat the Test, we find our mathematical misconceptions and gaps and we study topics around numeracy, algebra, and problem solving in order to guarantee the best possible score. We also examine social justice issues around standardized testing and remedial coursework.

Different students need different supports; technology is a tool used to serve all students.

In this class, students watch selected videos for their personal learning targets. A student may have missed the unit on systems of equations; perhaps someone never understood how we divide fractions. Based on our prior knowledge, we set personal learning goals and address them through mini-lessons, group work, and videos. 15 different videos happening around the room is chaotic and unproductive. We need headphones for students to tune out the noise and focus in on the content.

These headphones will also be used to create a musical response to standardized testing. Are these tests a good predictor of college success? How should students be placed into college courses? What are the graduation rates for those that take remedial courses? Students will study these questions and work with a local hiphop artist to express their stance with evidence. The headphones will ensure a studio-like experience.
