My Students

A typical day in the music room consists of students in kindergarten - second grade playing piano on Casio keyboards, third graders playing recorder, fourth graders playing drums and guitar and fifth graders playing violin.

As in most schools in the city there are a plethora of cultures and languages.

Our school has two dual language programs (French and Spanish) as well as students who speak Japanese and Amharic, so listening is an important skill for students as well as teachers. Our students enjoy helping each other and working together. In music class they work in pairs or small groups helping each other meet their goals. Students learn early on that it's O.K. To ask for help whether from a teacher or from a peer.

My Project

The students are learning to critique through peer and self assessment. Using a rubric they listen to the piece they or a classmate is learning. When listing for certain criteria they can then revise or refine their playing by giving each other positive feedback. Using this method they are able to manage their own learning. Our keyboards have headphone jacks so students are also able to play and listen to themselves privately. Students who play other instruments like the recorder, guitar or violin, ask a classmate to record them on my iPad. Then they are able to listen to themselves play.

Presently I have been purchasing headphones from the dollar store.

I have added these to the headphones I received from other teachers after asking them to donate at least one headphone from their listening centers. Many of the headphones are in disrepair and I do not have enough for all of the children to use. By receiving a class set of headphones it will guarantee that students will not have to search for a piano that has a working headphone. It also means quicker turn around time for revising.
