Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a unique and lively group of students. Before becoming a middle school teacher, I was a high school teacher. While I miss my high school teaching days for many reasons, my middle school students have truly challenged me to become a creative and innovative teacher in my classroom. I am constantly finding new ways to make them active learners in our history classroom.

Over the last several months I have seen my students come alive as we use more and more technology in our classroom.

As a history teacher, it can be a challenge to find lessons that are interactive while also covering key skills and topics in our content area. My students are active and social! They love to talk with each other and are filled with so much curiosity.

My students come from diverse backgrounds both socioeconomically and linguistically. Many of them, their families and themselves, have only recently moved to America. It's always such a pleasure to watch these students rise to the challenge of being students and teenagers in a whole new country. I truly believe many of my students will go onto become successfully lawyers, politicians, doctors, engineers, and teachers themselves.

My Project

As a teacher working in a Title I school, I am constantly challenged to think outside of the box to create engaging and leveled learning environments. I have found using technology-driven lesson plans in my classroom has created an equitable and exciting learning experience for ALL my students. I am currently working with programs like Nearpod, Google Classroom, simulation-based Social Studies games, and teacher-created projects. I am constantly looking for exciting videos, games, and interactive lessons which can be done in a small group or independently using technology.

I have already purchased headphones for my classroom, but I have found them to be poor quality and unable to block out background noise for enhanced concentration.

My goal as a teacher is to find resources that put my students in the driver's seat. Passive learning does not work, student-led learning does. These headphones will just be another tool in my tool box to continue to create these types of learning experiences for my students.
