My Students

An e-reader, such as the Nook, opens up a whole new world to many reluctant readers. Books come alive, they talk to you, they animate characters and there's even music on some. Listening with headphones and sharing that experience with a friend is a great way to begin to love books!

As an intervention teacher of 4th and 5th grade students, I have many who have yet to realize the power of a good book.

Thanks to donations via this site, our classroom now has nine Nooks in our new electronic library. The students are wanting to read everyday. It truly is quite an inspiring vision.

My Project

Many of the books available on the Nook, are interactive audio books. The students are able to follow along with the written word, while the book is read to them. They can highlight a word and find the definition through the embedded dictionary, they can read aloud with the audio to reinforce their reading skills. The headphones and splitters that I am asking for, will allow them to do all that and share it with their friend!

Can you imagine having nine Nooks, all with audiobooks playing at the same time, with the volume turned up?

Yes, it can get a little noisy! You will be helping all the students to engage in, what will hopefully be, their all time favorite past-time - reading (or listening) to a book. They will also be able to share that excitement with their friend at the same time, which could then lead to a great "book review" discussion. You will be making a difference in the lives of many!
