This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coming from more than 20 countries, and speaking over a dozen languages, my students are a daily reminder how big and small the world really is. Through their varied educations, upbringings, and personal stories, they come together to learn English and science with me.

My students are all learning English as a new language at the same time they are completing their requirements for high school graduation.

It's a huge challenge that takes lots of practice listening and speaking. Everyday, they work together to rehearse and recite their writing, make presentations, and give one another feedback. They are up to the challenge, but they need simple tools to do it.

My Project

Headphones are essential in a number of ways, but we don't have enough working pairs. When watching great science videos available online, students can listen at a pace that is right for them without interfering with each other. Headphones also provide clearer and louder sound than we can get from our older laptops' tinny speakers.

I teach my students how to record their own voices when doing lab reports or simply telling stories about their experiences - there is a huge amount of language learned as they listen and re-listen to themselves and one another.

Like the editing process in writing, repetition and revision are incredibly effective tools for learning language and mastering complex content. My students are invested in the process when they get to work with one anothers recordings. I've had students record their own presentations dozens of times and coach one another on how to get what they are saying just right. The more recordings, the more they've practiced and the more they are building confidence and language abilities.

Headphones are a tool we don't have enough of, but can't do without. Please donate and get us enough headphones so everyone can finally have a quality pair.
