This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 25 of the most amazing fourth-grade students who are a dynamic mixture of general education, special education, and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

This year is QUITE unique - I have more students tuning in remotely than I have in person.

I chose in person learning, and then soon went to blended since I only had 11 kids sign up for in person. After a few students were quarantined due to Covid - my principal saw me Livestreaming and a few days later asked if I would take more kids to reduce the class size in the fully remote classes. I thought about it. If I could do it for my 3 kiddos, why not take a few more! Well, my 11 grew to 25! It isn't easy! It isn't perfect! But it is what teaching is like in 2020! #Teacherlife

My Project

This year has taught me a lot...mostly, be flexible! It has also taught me to let go and not stress. I was lucky enough to have a class set of headphones that went home last March with some kiddos and this year with others. In a normal,setting, they would be used, returned, used again.

This is not regular times and there is no such thing as a regular classroom anymore.

I have taken the best parts of technology and kept them to use with my in-person kiddos as well as my remote kiddos. In person kiddos need headphones so you don’t hear the same thing from 12 different devices. Remote kiddos need it so they can drown out the noises of a household so they can pay attention.

This project is based on replenishing and replacing headphones for kids this year no next year as needed. Some kids know how to use and store headphones, others....not so much. I. Years past I would have argued, fussed, bugged parents.... but in a pandemic, I just let go and instead I am asking donors to help replenish and replace. It’s a problem that can be fixed without getting upset. Just ask for help! So here I am, asking for help for my kiddos - both in person and remote.
