This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our student-athletes have a genuine love for soccer and endless talent to show. Last year, we were officially established as a team to compete across district and had a successful season by winning the championship. Being part of the team has allowed our student-athletes build sportsmanship, comradery and responsibility which reflect our school’s core values. Like the motto states, work hard, play hard. This is the level of work ethic that our student-athletes have shown in the classroom and on the field.

A challenge that our club faces is the lack of proper gear to practice in, oftentimes, having one and not the other or they even practice in non-athletic wear.

I teach at a school that is 95% economically disadvantaged and the vast student population receive either a free or reduced lunch.

Unfortunately, our parents do not have the means to purchase soccer gear and as a team we struggle to find resources that can assist since we are not a funded club. Despite the circumstances, perseverance and enjoyment has been the driving force of the team.

My Project

With the soccer gear donated, this will allow us to place our focus on training. It is very difficult to not have all the proper gear to fully train since it can place an effect on the development of skills and increase accidents on the field.

Our student-athletes will be very appreciative for the soccer gear that gets donated and will serve as a spark that will continue to fuel their perseverance.

Each gear that would be donated would be utilized effectively during game days against others school as well, during practice. The nets that we need are the most crucially important due to our goals not having nets in which it could cause confusion if a goal was scored or not. The kwik goal net straps would save us much time when we would place the nets on the goals during the week so we wouldn’t have to use tape or strings. These straps would make It so much easier and faster to place the nets up and take them down. The flag sticks would stand out during games and practices to see each corner of the field and where the ball could be played. Any soccer field you observe, you can notice that flags are in each corner. We have two goalies on our team and both need goalie gloves because they got used up quickly during practice. We would like to have new gloves for our gloves to motivate them during the games.

With more resources in hand, this will also allow us to sustain the team and invite future Thornton United student-athletes. Please help us to have another successful season!
