My Students

"Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes"... did you sing the song in your head?? I did and do when I think about the varying sensory needs of my students from their heads to their toes. I teach a diverse group of 6 students, 3 females and 3 males with Autism between the ages of 4.5 and 6. Three of my students are non-verbal and three are minimally verbal and use voice output device and/visuals to communicate. Most of my students come from low-income families and most of the parents do not speak English. We are on the 4th floor of the General Education school with very tiny classrooms which are challenging for students with varying needs. Due to their diagnoses, many of them have sensory issues. Being able to provide a wide variety of sensory integrative techniques is very challenging due to lack of resources.

By providing seating options and other sensory strategies and toys, I will be able to provide the children with the input they need in the classroom to stay focused in an academic setting.

My Project

Students with Autism spectrum disorder experience a wide range of sensory dysfunction that can hinder their ability to participate during a lesson. This often leads to disruptive behavior such as tantrums, injury to self, and inability to focus. With the help of the Occupational Therapist and classroom staff, students can be provided with appropriate materials to suit their sensory needs. Sensory materials are calming for an overly stimulated student. It can also be stimulating for a lethargic or low arousal student.

The purpose of the project is to give students who are anxious and fidgeting a variety of calming items such as a weighted vest, pressure vest or a fidget toy of their choice.

Sensory items will be available to students based on their needs during the school day. For example, a student who has difficulty attending to task, and staying in a seat will be offered alternative seating or a fidget toy.

Furthermore, students will utilize visuals to request desired items when needed. Children will be grouped based on their educational goals. Students will utilize the tables for grouping in order to interact with peers to increase their social skills in asking and answering questions using communication devices.

My students constantly need sensory input to complete a simple task such as to write his or her name or to walk up the 4th floor to their classroom.

As a teacher, I have observed the positive impact of sensory strategies, devices and toys the occupational therapist implements to increase student engagement. I have seen a reduction in disruptive behavior and my most challenging student answer a question(s) using an interactive visual board.

I want to have sensory strategies, devices, and toys available to meet the needs of my students from their heads to their toes to help them learn throughout the school day!
