My Students

My students range from 13 to 20 years of age. They are boys and girls who speak a variety of first languages. They attend an urban high school within the poorest region of the city. Twenty-one point seven percent are English learners and 100 percent are economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Most of my students do not have headphones that they can use to listen to personalized multimedia resources.

Due to budget cuts, the school does not supply materials like stationery and headphones. Some students cannot afford a constant supply of required supplies. In addition, a number of students do not live in one place because the parents are either separated or the students live in a foster home. This affects their stability and consistent structure and therefore the students often come to school unprepared.

My Project

The headphones will enable my students to interact with individualized multimedia learning resources at their own pace. This will create a conducive learning environment since the sound from the multimedia resources will be localized to the individual learners. The students will also create models using colored paper. All students will have equitable access to learning since​ they will not be limited by lack of notebook or headphones. Each class will have a different colored notebook. This will make it easier for me to monitor students work from the different classes especially because my school has an alternate block schedule.
