My Students

"One child, one book, one teacher and one pen can change the world" was proudly displayed on our classroom wall last school year. This was a message that my students read from day one when they did not quite understand its meaning until the last day of the semester, when it really sunk in.

Our school is in an urban area of the San Fernando Valley.

Approximately 87% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 27% are in the English Learner program. The area is densely populated with large scale apartment complexes and fast food chains. Despite these challenges, our students are resilient and eager to learn about the world around them.

My Project

Last year, my students were fortunate to receive class sets of Malala's biography. The young reader's version for my struggling readers and the original version for my grade level and advanced readers. As we read the book, students, analyzed her speeches including the Nobel Peace Prize, NY Times documentaries and eventually choose a social issue to research and create a mock non-profit to address the issue. They had to think hard about the mission statement, funding, target population and much more. Students in other classes had similar activities. A year later, it would be a great learning opportunity for students to see the film to reinforce their prior learning.

Unfortunately, the majority of students do not have the resources for their families to take them to see this film in a theater.

By watching this film, it will reinforce their learning of Malala's message and see her actions.
