My Students

Many individuals with autism have difficulty processing and integrating sensory information. Autism’s symptoms often include difficulty processing sensory information such as textures, sounds, smells, tastes, brightness and movement. These difficulties can make ordinary situations feel overwhelming.

My class is an Autistic preschool class with eight students who range in age from three to five years old.

Many of my students are non-verbal and have sensory, communication, motor and social issues. There are a number of methods and techniques used in the education of autistic children. We use a variety of methods to teach our Autistic preschoolers and will modify curriculum and materials to fit each student's individual learning style. Many children in my class are visual learners, so we use a variety of pictures, charts, and visual representations when teaching. We also use a variety of concrete and hands-on materials for students who learn well through their tactile senses and exploration. The children spend most of their day in work sessions with staff members working one on one, or two on one. Autistic preschoolers need a small staff to student ratio in order to have individual time. Here they work on fine motor, language, social, behavioral, pre-academic, and communication skills. Many of the materials used in these work sessions are provided by the staff members.

My Project

Many of my Autistic preschoolers have sensory integration issues, which is the inability to handle the sounds, sights, and sensations of their daily surroundings. Sensory play helps them to become more at ease with these types of stimulation. I have requested sensory tubs and sensory play materials because they will give the students a variety of materials to help them deal with this type of sensitivity by allowing them to be hands-on and experiment. They will get to feel different textures, hear the sounds the materials make when poured in or out of a bucket, cup, or other object.

Your donation to this project will improve my classroom by giving us new materials to work on sensory issues with the Autistic preschoolers.

They struggle daily with these sensitivities and having activities to expose them to will help them understand textures, sounds, and even the sight of the materials. Some students often are calmed by sensory activities and your donation will help those students who need to work on calming their bodies.
