Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello. I am a science teacher. I feel a great responsibility to provide a superb classroom learning experience for the young lives I touch. My students are diverse, ranging in age from pre-kindergarten through to the sixth grade. Over ninety percent qualify for free lunch. Their parents often work two jobs and do not have time to take their kids to the library. These students are dependent upon me and their school to provide them with materials that will help them learn how to read, and read effectively, as they do research in order to learn about their world. The Internet is an excellent resource for many of my older students, but the younger kids and students who are challenged in reading have other needs. I need a wonderful classroom library that will help my students be curious and resourceful and I am asking for 46 science books at various grade levels. I believe strongly that literacy must be stressed across all the subjects, including science. All of my students, no matter what grade, are fascinated with space, ecosystems, animals, and other science topics. Unfortunately I do not currently have enough books to provide an adequate lending library for my students. I encourage my students to pursue their interests by reading. Having more books would make this possible. For example, I am asking for books that will help students understand forces such as gravity and magnetism, books that explore the properties of sound and light, books that will help them understand our solar system and books about the United States space program, as well as books about our environment and many other topics. Generally, these books offer colorful, detailed illustrations, clear text and, in some cases, hands-on experiments. My students would benefit immensely from having a classroom library filled with interesting and challenging books. These books would be used by many students for many, many years. Thank you.
