My Students

I am an adapted physical education teacher for students with Autism. Our gym is a small classroom shared with therapists. My students have struggled to learn new skills with our limited equipment and space. We love to be active but we can learn so many more skills with different equipment.

My students have moderate to severe Autism and are in class sizes of either 6:1:1 or 12:1:1.

Many of our students are non-verbal, have behavioral and sensory issues but they still love to be active. My students struggle with gross motor skills and often their special needs can get in the way of their learning. Our school is located in a low-income and urban setting. I want to create a fun and active environment for my students to learn skills to improve their fitness. With your help, we can create an environment where the students can be successful with new skills and lead them towards a healthy lifestyle.

My Project

With the equipment I am requesting, my students will learn many new skills. My students struggle to learn throwing and catching skills because balls are often too hard to catch or too big to control. With this equipment everything will be soft for the students to catch without being afraid, the Velcro gloves will help the students be more successful and encourage them to continue working on the skills. Also, the targets will allow the entire class to be involved in the activity which will keep them on track instead of becoming distracted while waiting for their turn. Finally, we have limited space and not a normal gymnasium so we can use the basketball hoop to learning shooting skills instead of only dribbling and passing skills.

With your donations to this project we will have new equipment that will help our students become more active.

It will allow our students to have more opportunities to learn and practice new skills and help them be more successful. My goal as an APE teacher is to teach skills to my students that they can use outside of school to enjoy physical fitness and lead them towards a healthy lifestyle.
