My Students

Are we crabby? Why, of course! Not really, but we would like to add some hermit crabs to our classroom.

I am a kindergarten teacher at a small, rural school in South Carolina.

Currently, we have 17 students in our classroom. Each and every one of them is very interested in the living world, and they enjoy taking care of our classroom pets. There is only one critter that is missing - hermit crabs.

My Project

We would like to set up a hermit crab haven in our classroom. A few years ago, I was able to establish a healthy hermit crab habitat, but one by one they each perished. I still have all of the necessary equipment but just need the hermit crabs to reestablish the habitat. Hermit crabs are virtually maintenance free, and they provide a wonderful chance for children to take on extra responsibility. Daily feeding and watering would become part of our "helper chores." Also, necessary cleaning and aquarium upkeep would be shared among classmates. Hermit crabs are not all work and no play! Some of the fun hermit crab projects would include naming the hermit crabs, deciding if they were boys or girls, and the most fun of all --- Hermit Crab Races! The children would be able to have so much fun making predictions and measuring distance/time before and after the hermit crab races.
