This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I can’t wait to meet the 190 eighth grade students that will be passing through my classroom this school year. I already know their diverse experiences and skill sets will make this year one in which everyone will grow and be ready for high school!

After a delayed first day of school, due to Hurricane Harvey, more than ever my students will need a motivating place for learning and tools to help them succeed.

Our school is a zoned middle school in Southwest Houston. Our population is constantly growing due to the increase of refugee students and English Language Learners (ELL). I admire the grit and determination they have to overcome any challenge that comes across them. They have a character that with adequate guidance can set them up to succeed on anything they propose.

My two 8th grade Mathematics classes are composed by mainly ELL students, many of whom are Newcomers. Some of the home languages are Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Kirundi, Farsi, Urdu and Cantonese (Chinese). As a mathematics teacher my goal is to ensure that every member of our diverse student population has the opportunity to succeed academically and be empowered to lead within our community.

My Project

For most of my New American students this will be the first time having a hands on experience with technology of this kind.

Learning how to build a computer and maneuvering a drone will spark curiosity on my students leading to further inquiry of STEM applications in the real world.

These materials will drive exploration during my Enrichment class and will serve as tools to support instruction of mathematics. Recording their learning process will allow students to reflect and share with others their findings.

Your donation will make possible to integrate STEM learning within the math classroom, I am sure students will be eager to come and learn.
