Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Is that a spaceship?" exclaimed one of my confused kindergartners as she pointed at the unused kiln in my art room. Help me bring 3-D art alive by funding clay and glazes that will provide an entire K-8 school with ceramics for the year. We have the kiln--let's not let it go to waste!

My art students are inner city kids who love to use their creativity on a daily basis.

Most live in the same neighborhood and receive free school lunch because of low income status. Not much money at home shouldn't prevent them from being given the chance to receive a world class art education though! Many of my students are very active and hands-on and respond really well to clay. I've used modeling clay in the past and am amazed by how engaged the kids are with this medium. Most of my students don't have many art supplies at home, so I like to provide them with varied experiences with different media. Since our school promotes a college going atmosphere, I want students to be able to create diverse portfolios to apply to art high schools and eventually colleges. Ceramics would add diversity to their art repertoire and motivate creativity in the classroom!

My Project

Remember that clay project you made in third grade that still sits on your parents' mantel? Recall how proud you felt bringing it home? Clay and glazes would allow 24 classrooms of students to create ceramic projects. I teach kindergarten to eighth grade, so the variety of lessons would be great. Primary students would be able to sculpt animals and insects they are learning about in science. Elementary students would roll coils to make bowls and cups, or geometrically design tiles that relate to math concepts. Junior Academy students would make gargoyles to illuminate their history lessons about medieval Europe or create self portrait busts that express their developing identities. Additionally, my undergraduate work included a lot of college ceramics. I am well qualified (and excited) to teach the art of clay to 500+ students who are excited to learn!

Funding this project will provide an ENTIRE INNER CITY SCHOOL with a ceramics program for a year.

We have the students; we have the teacher; we have the kiln--all we need are supplies! You can make an impact on an entire school!
