Have a Heart!

My students need 44 pig hearts and 55 sheep hearts, to dissect and examine, in the effort to better understand the mechanics involved with the heart and the circulation process.

My Students

Throughout secondary education adolescents must listen, read, and write each day. It is rare that they get the opportunity to explore the scientific world directly with their minds using the hands on means of dissection. When they are engaged this way it opens up a more interesting world to them.

My students are great!

I spend every moment that I am not with my own wife and two kids with them trying to shape their lives for the better. I even enjoy running with them after school as the Cross Country Coach (pictured above is our boys and girls 2011 team). As you can see they are a diverse group of urban adolescents ! Some are gifted and others have special needs. This project will involve over 220 of the best and brightest young African American, Latino, Asian and Caucasian students in Southern California. They are fortunate to attend a magnet school, but unfortunate NOT to be attending a school that has Title I funding. Therefore, unlike most impoverished schools in California, our school DOES NOT QUALIFY for EXTRA FUNDING as just over 50% of our student body is not below the poverty level. The supplies I use as a science teacher are often only those I get donated by parents of the children I teach or purchase with my own money on eBay or local education retail store.

My Project

Many of my students have never even had the opportunity to WITNESS A TEACHER dissect. This donation will provide them with not only a chance to see the teacher do it but also to DO THE dissection THEMSELVES !!! I can not overestimate the impact this will have on their motivation for science and health. It will provide the students the chance to explore the internal world of the mammalian heart with all the wonder of a kid eating his/her first cotton candy!

I teach mostly middle school students.

Although many urban minority students enter this level of schooling with a desire to attend a 4 year college or university by the time they graduate many have become sidetracked or settle for alternate choices. By providing my students with direct dissection based labs, I find it inspires them to stay focused and motivated to want to continue to pursue their science education beyond graduation.
