My Students

My gifted Kindergarteners have an incredible range of strengths and talents. My students need a highly engaging group project, so that each child can go in-depth while I meet them at a level that is simultaneously individually challenging and supportive. My little ones will be exploring big ideas while answering essential questions and coming up with new questions.

My five and six year olds are peaceful, empathetic, kind and friendly.

They are observers, explorers, inventors and researchers. They come from all over our city and channel their diversity, becoming a strong team and a kind family.

My Project

The classroom incubator package comes with everything we'll need to turn and care for the eggs, see the embryo develop inside, and warm the newly hatched chicks with the brooder. The glass tank will provide a safe place for the chicks to grow. While most of the chicks will go to homes in the Chicago area, we'll keep a male and female so that we can observe the full life cycle, as the adults care for a new clutch of eggs.

We'll read informational texts about eggs and life cycles, learn new vocabulary, and practice writing while we observe and care for the quail.

The quail project will allow us to expand on our butterfly life cycle project this year. Young children are naturally empathetic and kind, so caring for small creatures, after they've hatched, is an especially engaging scientific endeavor in Kindergarten. It is essential, in our urban school, to create as many opportunities as possible to incorporate nature into the classroom.

This is our discovery project for our Changes unit and integrates multiple subject areas. This unit is designed to help us learn about life cycles through exploration. It's incredibly engaging to see, on our first field trip, how the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum houses both butterfly and quail. With these supplies, we'll be able to replicate this experience in our classroom.
