Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being young again and experiencing everything in life for the very first time. Th more information you learn at school, the better. What about the way in which we learn this information. Wouldn't it be more fun if it were interactive, as if we were little scientists of our own?

I work with students that are predominantly diagnosed as having Autism.

These children range in age from 5-7. They attend a public school located in an inner city neighborhood. Most of our students receive free meals because the poverty levels are high for most of our students. Many of our students suffer from fine and gross motor difficulties. These students have trouble with sensory processing, social interactions, retaining information, communicating with others, and auditory processing. Many of these students are significantly delayed from their peers and need more time with repeated instruction in order to learn information. These students enjoy hands on activities that grasp their attention to learn.

My Project

We are requesting an incubator so that we can be mini scientists in our classroom. We want to have a hands on life experience in which we can take part in mother natures process. We are currently doing an author study in which the author describes a birds nest and the process before the birds hatch. These abstract concepts are very difficult for our students to grasp. How better may we teach them then with hands on activities? We need to give our students options, choices, in order for them to excel to the best of their ability.

This project is important because it will give my students an opportunity to appreciate mother nature.

My students will learn from this hands on experience. These children who live in a very urban area and live in apartments will be exposed to something that may only be witnessed in a rural setting (ex: on a farm). It is a wonderful gift to give others an equal opportunity for education regardless of disability, age, or geographical location.
