Hatching Chicks in TK!

My students need an incubator and supplies to hatch chicks in our classroom to learn about the animal life cycle.

My Students

We are a large elementary school in Northern California. We have a very diverse population in our school. I have students whose families come from all over the world. In my class alone, we speak six different languages. What wonderful diversity! Being a transitional kindergarten class we do a lot of hands-on exploration and have a lot of firsts - first time to write our names, first time to count, first time to use scissors, first time to have any type of schooling.

My Project

STEM is a very important aspect of education, even in Transitional Kindergarten!!!

Predicting, (live) observation, and journaling is research-based techniques for scientific learning, which are invaluable in early education.

We will observe each stage of development by keeping a calendar of the 21-day process. Students will record each stage in their journals. They will be able to predict what the chicks will look like and their capabilities when they hatch. Students will watch chicks hatch live in our classroom. Chicks will be hatching at Open House so that students can explain the process to their parents.

Through developing and hatching chicks in our classroom, students will learn about the scientific process, and it will be memorable and therefore provide a solid foundation for lifelong learning in life science.
