The New York State Curriculum requires that fifth grade students study the Western Hemisphere and the countries of Latin America and Canada. This year, I read a book called Hatchet written by Gary Paulsen. This book has received the Newbery Medal of Honor for its outstanding depiction of a 13 year old boy stranded in the Canadian wilderness. In the story, Brian is on a plane which crashes and he must learn to survive all alone. The story is full of adventure and teaches many lessons of perseverance and self-determination. As we read the story, the students will read their own adventure novel that they have chose from a list that I have provided. We will make correlations between their stories analyzing the hero, identifying the true enemy or villain and recognizing the obstacles faced by the main character. As a culminating activity the students will watch the movie Castaway starring Tom Hanks which surprisingly has many common themes with the story Hatchet. In our social studies lessons, we will research the climate, animals, plants and landforms of Canada. The students will be placed in groups and others will research and compare Canadian culture to that of the United States. I teach two classes of English and Social Studies with 30 students everyday. I only have 25 copies of the book and most of the students have to purchase their own. I am asking for 35 copies of Hatchet to serve two classes of 5th grade students. They will be used for many years to come. Thank you for taking the time to read and possibly fund my proposal.
