My Project

Throughout the year, we raise chickens for harvesting and we need some new supplies for the process. The cones and apron are much needed items for the process, and the wire, shears, and other items just make the process easier. In Hawaii, chickens are feral animals that run wild all over the place. Our school has hundreds of them, and we catch them and harvest them for food a few times a year. We usually use the chicken to make broth for soups and stews and eat the meat in lots of ways.

Teaching my students how to live off the land is important because Hawaii is so dependent on the rest of the world for our food supplies.

Many of them are wary of eating something that was running around on the farm, but that teaches them where their food comes from and gives them the opportunity to eat something that is free of preservatives and other yucky things we might not know about. Self reliance is an important trait to learn, especially here where we can hunt, harvest, and gather food year-round.
