My Students

If Harry Potter has done one thing for the Muggle world, it is making children fall in love with reading again. I teach in a challenging neighborhood, where my students have many set-backs, but for one hour each day, they can put everything aside and immerse themselves in the world of Harry Potter.

We are a Title 1 school in Arizona.

The students at this school are often experiencing the United States for the first time, coming to us as refugees from many countries like Syria, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and others! We also have a high population of immigrants from Mexico. All these students have faced struggles that most adults could never understand, but they come to school every day with such a hunger for learning! They identify with Harry Potter, who has lost his parents, been mistreated by the world, and is already far behind from the moment he enters school. But through his hard work and skills, he become the best in the school, and my students see themselves in that development and growth. Underneath the sometimes-tough exterior, these kids want to be successful readers and students.

My Project

Our classroom behavior system, incentives, and theme all revolve around Harry Potter. We start the year off reading "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," which teaches us about the importance of friendship, bravery, teamwork, and the courage to do what's right. I was going to only read this first book, but my students loved it so much, they have been requesting to read the second as well. This book will let us connect a theme across two books to show how authors intentionally plan and choose themes (like friendship and bravery) and how they weave them throughout all their works. It will also give us the opportunity to explore character development in a much more in-depth way; we can continue the work we started with the beloved characters of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, as well as delve deeper into the motivations of antagonists like Draco Malfoy and Professor Snape. Through the use of Harry Potter, students in my class are engaged and excited about reading.

In the short-term, this book set will provide enjoyment to my students by allowing them to revisit favorite characters and discover how they have grown and changed.

In the bigger picture, I hope my students see pieces of themselves in these characters, and can use the lessons they learn about overcoming obstacles in their own lives. I also hope that they become great fans of reading, and continue to read for enjoyment once they leave my room.
