My Students

My students are in low-income/high-poverty school district. They are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Because of these many challenges that they face, I am looking to help my students stay motivated and have fun learning. My school is a public elementary school in Harlem, New York City. It is an International Baccalaureate School that aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

The visual arts curriculum at my school is designed to integrate the visual arts across the curriculum, while simultaneously teaching students art-making skills and techniques.

The art projects demonstrate such themes as exploration, animals and the natural world, portraits, landscapes, and more!

My Project

The digital cameras will be used to create a Photography program at my school that will allow students to use photography to explore the Elements of Art. The Elements of Art are Line, Color, Shape, Texture, Form, Value, and Space.

The students will go on community walks in order to capture these Elements of Art in neighborhood architecture, animals, people, transportation, landscapes, and neighborhood scenes.

Students will also be exposed to the work of photographers such as Gordon Parks and Annie Leibovitz. They will use some of the styles and techniques of such photographers as inspiration for their own photographs.
