Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's hard to study plants when your school is in the middle of the largest U.S. city. Concrete, pavement and towering buildings are all one sees. But the lack of natural space outdoors won't stop us from creating a plant-friendly environment indoors.

Our school is a small Title I school that sits in the most diverse place in New York City and the United States: Queens.

Traveling along the number 7 train, one can hear over a dozen languages spoken by people who have come from all over the world. The hallways of our school are no different. All of my students are immigrants and English Language Learners (ELL's). They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential. Many of my students have a close relationship with nature and growing plants in their homelands. Any time we do projects with plants they can't wait to get their hands dirty. They care for the plants they grow like their children.

My Project

I want to combine my students' enthusiasm for plant science with hands-on engineering and problem solving by having them build and study hydroponic systems. Hydroponics are a practical and inexpensive way to grow plants when real estate is in short supply and the only way to go is up. The vertical farms we build will be compact enough to hang in a window, yet endlessly adaptable for them to tinker and optimize to grow the best plants. STEM careers require that students practice building their own creations and test them scientifically. With tubing, air pumps, and timers, combined with tools and some recycled plastic bottles, my students will have the opportunity to study plants and hydroponics through hands-on learning experiences. My ambition is for my international students to bring hydroponics to bear in their community, growing herbs or vegetables from their home countries, and even to teach others how to build and use these systems.

Most students, and especially ELL's, learn best by hands-on experiences.

This particular project will challenge them to think creatively and produce something that will serve them for years to come. They will not only learn about plant science and engineering but also help to beautify and green the school in the process.
