District 75 houses the highest needs special needs students and, oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.
My students are part of the largest school district in the country (the NYC DOE) and fall into the highest needs category.
For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.
I teach grades K-8 and a total of 9 classes, a daily lunch club, and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.
My Project
My students and I have undertaken a project to save all of our school's broken laptops! After going through one by one, it became clear that many had suffered from falls resulting in corrupted hard drives. When trying to repair and re-image them, they were beyond saving.
The good news is: this is a wonderful opportunity to upgrade the old mechanical hard drives which have moving parts, to solid state drives.
Solid state drives drastically speeds up a computer, even if it is many years old. They also do not have moving parts, so the likelihood of the hard drive becoming corrupted due to a fall is much less common. We are also going to upgrade the RAM on the slowest Macbooks to breath new life into them! This will allow approximately 200 students/year to use these laptops! Over the next 3 years, 600+ students will get to use these Macbooks!
With your help, we can take these laptops from being unusable to something that we can get a good 3+ years out of for a fraction of what it would cost to buy new computers! With 30 Inland Professional 120GB SSD 3D NAND SATA Drives we can make all this happen. This entire rehab project will cost less than what a single Macbook would go for today! We will end up with around 30 working laptops that will go in carts for students to use, traveling from class to class!
My students will be at the helm of this project as I teach them how to clone an image of a hard drive, re-image a blank hard drive and replace the existing hard drive with the new one and replace RAM. With your help, we can complete this incredible hands-on STEM project and get these laptops back in the hands of students: where they belong! Thank you so much!
