Hard Chair or Yoga Ball: What do you think, Ya'll?

My students need exercise/fitness balls to use as an alternative to traditional chairs. The balls give their bodies something to do so their minds can learn without resorting to distracting behaviors.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students walk into school knowing it's the safest and best place they will be all day. Our entire title one campus receives free breakfast and lunch and is also provided many other free resources like the after-school program, parenting information classes, and counseling. Our school also prides itself on our enrichment activities such as district sports, Battle of the Books, and many clubs. All of these are provided by teachers who give up their personal time and resources because they want to expose our kids to experiences many would not have other wise.

All of my students walk into school knowing that BOTH of their languages are honored and respected.

My classroom and school is a place where they get to learn English and are given academic opportunties that many of their parents were not given. At the same time, they get to learn and develop their first language (Spanish) until the 5th grade! Their parents also feel safe in our school because most of our staff is bilingual and we encourage parent support no matter what language they speak. Our goal is to send our students to middle school Bilingual, Biliterate, and Bicultural!

My Project

The exercise/fitness balls will be used instead of chairs in my classroom this year. Most children have difficulty sitting still for more than a few minutes in a chair because their sensory systems aren't fully developed. Being wiggly isn't a behavior problem, it is a normal stage of development. My job as an educator is to make learning easier for my students, not demand the impossible.

When students sit on stability balls in class, both sides of their brain are activated and attention is increased.

Students' need for physical movement is satisfied in the act of balancing and in turn students are more likely to engage in learning and write better! Students are also forced to have better posture without a back rest which also increases concentration and focus.

I am confident these stability balls are going to have my students and I balancing for joy!
