Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Avoiding distractions is my goal to having happy teenage students. How?

Well, teenagers get hungry, need personal supplies, need mental health checks, and appreciate feeling included.

My students come from all “walks of life” and there is no one size fits all. I like to create a safe environment for my students so that they will actually be motivated to learn. I know when they feel comfortable, they are happier.

Feeling safe is having all the right needs available: tissues, band-aids, feminine hygiene products, even face wipes are frequent requests. Having snacks available for my students helps curb hunger distractions.

Feeling comfortable is a game changer for my students. The walls in my classroom are concrete and the lights are florescent. This environment isn’t the most welcoming or comfortable. Light filters will create a softer effect in the room and adding decorations like bulletin boards, motivational quotes, movie/book quotes, and anchor charts will create a less intimidating atmosphere. Students also volunteer to decorate “their” room with their classmates to feel pride and ownership of their work. During our independent reading time, my students could use the seat cushions on the floor to get a change of routine from their desk seats.

I also have students who are my “assistants” and organize my assignments for me. Having wall organizers would be a good independent way for the students to take ownership of their assignments.

Feeling respected and acknowledged is a gift that I provide to my students through rewards and prizes. Students get candy rewards for positive behavior and they also love to receive stickers for their water bottles and/or notebooks. Fidget toys are great for students who have anxiety about testing or general life worries.

When students feel safe, respected, and acknowledged - positive results happen.
