Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students from Harlem New York are diverse in culture as well as learning needs. My classroom is a special education 12:1:1 setting. The students are low but they show an eagerness to learn and better themselves. My students are mostly males who love to read graphic novels as well as create their own. They are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They love hands-on, active, and engaging projects that allow them to be creative!

Despite their learning disabilities, they come to school each day ready to try new things and take chances in order to grow academically as well as in their every day lives.

These children are an inspiration and they are the reason I go to work everyday.

My Project

With a class full of boys, it's hard to keep their attention when it comes to reading. The books in my classroom are dated and falling apart, I don't even want to read them.

A fresh new library with interesting and familiar titles and well as catchy covers will attract my stubborn and reluctant readers and stimulate engaging book talks and reviews.

I chose multiple copies of books so that students would be able to partner read. More specifically, I opted for a class set of Fish in a Tree because it relates to my students and sends the message that, despite having a disability they are incredible and can do incredibly wonderful things.
