My Project

Students need to learn emotions are normal, part of life, and absolutely necessary. The importance is to also learn what it is that helps them regulate their emotions and use tools that will foster a positive mindset. These "tools" / items will help guide in allowing students to recognize the emotions they feel, and then allow them to discover what soothes and or calms them down. These sensory items will enhance our calming center and create the safe space I strive to create for my students at our "Zen Zone". I was very specific to this particular age group's needs when picking sensory items. I chose squishy emotion balls to not only foster oral expression but also allow students to be cognizant of their emotions and help them develop their own understanding of what it is that helps them regulate their emotions if need be. Every child is different keeping this in mind, I selected a variety of sensory items i.e squishy beads, lava lamps, and yoga cards that will allow my students' brains' to take a break.

The ultimate goal is for students to develop self-advocacy in not only recognizing their emotions but utilizing the tools that work best for them when they are feeling certain emotions.

Also, enriching students with books/print may foster a better understanding of why they feel emotions and help normalize that it is ok because they have tools to guide and help them.

In my zen zone, I hope my students understand our brains need breaks in order to continue on tasks. And I hope our zen zone will be able to provide the space for just that with an abundance of sensory items all students will be able to use.
