Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Eager. Curious. Funny. Affectionate. Musical.

Every morning, I am greeted by smiles and hugs from our future community leaders in one of the most diverse cities in California.

They come to school prepared to do their best, and, in return, I strive to take ordinary standards and transform them into accessible and engaging content. My students are not statistics or numbers in a demographic breakdown. They are novelists, scientists, game designers, and teachers. Communities in the Bay Area are always changing, but the need for serving our students in the best way possible is always there.

My Project

Literacy centers are an effective way for students to learn about and practice their reading and comprehension skills. We use the Daily 5 in our classroom where one group meets with me for guided reading, while the rest of the class chooses to work in different literacy centers where they might be practicing writing, using reading programs on laptops or doing word work.

This year, I would like to add a Wireless Classroom Headphones Set to our listening center where students can listen to selected stories from our ELA curriculum or other literature relevant to other areas of study, like science or social studies.

Benefits of listening to reading include access to texts that are otherwise difficult, modeled fluency and expression, exposure to other genres, exposure to new vocabulary, and building essential listening skills. For English Language Learners, listening to reading exposes students to language patterns, pronunciation, intonation, expression, and it helps them connect the sounds to their home language.

In addition to the listening center, the various comfy seats (Flex Space Comfy Floor Seats and Flex Space Wobble Cushions) will create a snug and serene space for reading. One of my favorite memories as a kid was being able to curl onto the classroom beanbag and lose myself in some Judy Blume during silent reading. My students love being able to spread out and relax while reading, and they have the right idea - reading should be (and is) a pleasurable experience!
