My Students

People often ask me why I commute so far away to teach when I could work in a much more affluent community closer to where I live. The simple answer is because I have never been a happier teacher than when I'm with my students. They make me smile, laugh, sing and dance, and challenge me everyday. There are 5 different primary languages in my homeroom this year, the entire district receives free breakfast and lunch due to high poverty levels and there's no where else I'd rather be.

My Project

In our first grade classroom, one of my absolute favorite units to teach is our fairy tale unit. The students fall in love with the fantastic characters and magical worlds. Over the years, I have built up my library of fairy tales and have recently come upon this new series of books in which the stories are told from the point of view of the "villain". I purchased a few and found that once again my students were enthralled with these new and different versions. It teaches them to compare and contrast, and to see the story from different perspectives. Funding of this project will also build up our small listening center, as well as encourage the children to participate in reader's theater experiences. I thank you for reading about our project and greatly appreciate anything you can give.
