Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a public school in a high need area of Chicago. The second grade consists of about 60 students, non-English and English speakers.

The cost of field trips is extremely high for our childrens' parents. The cost of the bus alone is $5 per child. The parents can just not absorb the high cost of adding a workshop.

We would like to allow the children the opportunity to participate in a wonderful hands on workshop presented at the Shedd Aquarium by marine life professionals. These workshops would allow the children to use their higher level thinking skills to learn about and create their own habitats. The second workshop, Animals in Action, will explore "the what and the why of animal movements". The visit to the aquarium after the workshop will allow the children to practice their new learned skills of observation. The children will gain a better understanding of aquatic life and will build background knowledge for the aquarium visit.

Chicago is a wonderful place with many museums and adding a workshop will help the children to better understand what they are seeing. Without your help we will not be able to provide this experience for our children of limited incomes. Many of these children are limited English speakers and low income and do not have the ability to visit these fine establishments on their own let alone participate in a formal workshop. Your help can make this wonderful experience a reality for these children.
