My Students

As a speech language pathologist I support students across the district with unique communication needs in a variety of early learning, elementary and middle school classrooms. Many of the students in these classrooms have a diagnosis of autism or delays in language. The students in these classrooms represent a diverse section of our city that is often overlooked. My students work super hard and they are eager and excited to learn.

The students benefit from visuals to help facilitate communication with adults and peers.

We have many students whose primary mode of communication is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication system, such as a low-tech core vocabulary board.

At times, it is difficult for these students to carry their core vocabulary boards while moving about the building to lunch, or art, music or gym, recess, or even dismissal. When these items are in classroom, our students are unable to communicate wants and needs with adults and peers. We want our students to be communicating all the time with everyone throughout the day.

My Project

I am requesting card stock, lanyards and binder rings for the ability to communicate with everyone they encounter. My students will have access to communicate outside of their classrooms by providing more portable and accessible core vocabulary boards. Easier access to communication supports allows students to express wants and needs, excitement, frustration and minimize their behaviors when not understood.

Breakaway lanyards that the students can safely wear throughout the day will facilitate their access to low-tech core vocabulary boards at all times during the school day.

Access to these materials will also help adults and peers to communicate with our students in the school building. My students will be able to successfully express

themselves just like their typical peers.
