My Students

We are a Title 1 school. We are located in an urban community in Brooklyn, New York. Many of the residents are West Indian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, African-American, and Guyanese. Also, the area is a cluttered 'melting pot' mixed with industrial cement factories, automotive body shops, storage facilities, and 'high' crime. At Cultural Arts Academy, the Visual and Performing Arts are infused into the core curriculum. From grades K-5, every student receives instruction in dance, music, drama, and the visual arts. In addition, we are the first charter school in New York state to achieve 'Lighthouse' status following the The Leader in Me: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steve Covey.

I encourage my 'scholars' to establish big goals and strive for excellence.

They come to school prepared to learn because they understand the importance of an education. Some scholars are visual learners, others kinesthetic, including those with special needs. Yet, all are bright and inquisitive. They are eager. No matter the challenge, they excel academically due to their connection to the Arts. It is because of my students, I excitedly look forward to teaching to my very best daily.

My Project

The Visual and Performing Arts area at Cultural Arts Academy presents two large productions every year: a Winter Dance/Music/Drama concert and Spring musical. The school relies on the students to gather clothing from their closets for costumes. When the students bring them in, there is literally no place for us to hang them. Therefore, everything goes in the corner of the floor in the Dance/Music room. Clothing is stacked on top of each other in plastic or cloth garment bags. We ask parents to label clothing, to diminish losing or misplaced clothing. Many times, garment bags have ripped. Clothing drops out, and teachers discover parents have labeled the bags and not their clothing. In addition, the students get excited during dress rehearsals and throw their clothes on the floor during quick changes, not realizing they have thrown pieces about the floor. Volunteer parents and teachers do their best during performances, but, the process can be challenging and/or unproductive. Valuable costumes: dresses, pants, tops, socks, shirts, and shoes are lost.

The clothing racks will help us tremendously.

We will be better to keep track of costumes. There is better organization. With adequate clothing racks, we can designate each character with a name plate that can be placed on the rack, and that scholar can 'hang' their clothing in that area. Again, clothing is hung and labeled appropriately. Losing or misplaced items becomes extremely diminished. This also prevents clutter or students 'sifting' through piled high clothing. Also, the clothing racks affords the actors the comfortability to perform quick changes. They go directly to the assigned clothing rack, and their garments are there.
