Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has departmentalized the 5th grade in order to prepare the students for the transition to middle school. This school year, I have two groups of 5th graders who are a very energetic and enthusiastic bunch! Most of the students in my two classes face different struggles in their home lives and at school.

Our classroom is a place where students can learn in an engaging way.

I try to make learning interactive to sustain the students' attention. During our math workshop we use the smart board, document camera, games, small groups/partner activities and take to your seat center tasks.

Since our school community is comprised of many English Language Learners, many of the students are still developing their vocabulary in the English language. Therefore, to develop math vocabulary we play the aligned vocabulary games within each chapter.

In order to grasp new concepts students MUST be engaged!

My Project

The math tool kit will enhance the students' experience with learning new math concepts. Every day students will need these supplies during the math workshop. It is very time consuming to distribute materials for each lesson. Therefore, the math kits will help foster independence and responsibility. Also, all the time that is saved will allow for more MATH time!

"The only way to LEARN mathematics is to DO mathematics." by Paul Halmos.

This quote supports my core belief for the way I teach my students.

Each kit will contain supplies that are necessary for success in math. A pencil is an important tool in math, therefore a good sharpener is needed for constant use. One game piece (1 in pawn) will be included for vocabulary games that students may play in partnerships. I will use the student grouping pencils to assign partners. Also, I will create and laminate a multiplication/division table, fraction bars, place value chart, and other teacher-made charts. In order to create these tools, I need: colored card stock paper, a laminator, laminating sheets, and a paper cutter. Another great use of the tool kit is that the students may also take it home to use for homework and studying.
