Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

ABC, 123, Simple to all, but not in my classroom. Some students are exposed to letters for the first time in my classroom.

I completely relate to my students in my classroom, I see myself in their shoes, and I share with them that my parents live 4 blocks away form our school.

My students get surprised when they hear me speak to their parents in Spanish. Many of my students live in a single family home with multiple families and/or extended families. Some of my families live in a single bedroom or garage. These students have no privacy or motivation to do homework because they have to compete with a noisy house. In many of these households preschool was not considered important. In other households a preschool schedule (3hrs a day) seemed difficult because of their full day work schedule and not being able to take their children to school in the middle of the day. All my students qualify for our free lunch program. Some of my students come to school without eating breakfast at home. They have to wait until recess to eat their breakfast. Some of my students have to learn and focus while being hungry.

My Project

Many of my students begin kindergarten with a challenge on their first day of school. Why? Because they did not have a preschool experience or any type of preschool skills from home. As I try to review and reinforce a simple concept of letter names and sounds, these students need motivational- hands on activities to help them better retain these concepts. I need to move these students from paper and pencil activities to motivational activities. These students who are struggling did not even know how to hold a pencil on the first day of school. These activities, games, and books are vital for my students. I believe they will get motivated and master a simple concept of alphabet letter names and sounds.

If I do not seek assistance for my students, my students have no voice.

I have to do everything possible to help my students master a simple concept as the alphabet letter names and sounds. This is a vital part for the rest of their educational career. Many of my students experience 2 grade levels in one school year. Many of my students learn those preschool skills never received in preschool and their kindergarten standards.
