This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the smartest, most creative transitional kindergarten students on the planet. And I can't wait to meet them! Unfortunately, our first interactions are on a screen. My school is beginning the year with a distance learning model due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

More than half of our student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.

Most families work outside the home as essential workers. They are hardworking people trying their best to provide all their children need to be successful in school. Yet, supporting learning at home can be challenging for working parents. It is a difficult time for our families. Extra money to purchase educational supplies is not available for many families. Help me to help them make distance learning more accessible and realistically manageable. Recreating hands-on learning experiences at home is the goal. Young children need developmentally appropriate manipulatives and materials to support literacy and the development of mathematical reasoning.

The pandemic has strained school budgets. We teachers are struggling to provide for the basic educational needs of our students. Please help.

My Project

In class, my students would have countess opportunities to explore numbers through play. They would experiment with mathematical concepts through collaborative games. Or practice problem solving with daily hands-on activities.

Since I can’t bring my students to my class, help me bring a bit of my class to them.

Each will have their own “Math Tool Kit” consisting of a set of dominoes, tactile number line, magnetic numbers, ten frame magnets and rekenrek beads to use at home. They can play, experiment and explore numbers and support mathematical reasoning. Students can also use these tools to participate in interactive math games to make of online lessons fun, engaging and meaningful. These tools will grow with my students’ skills and abilities as the year progresses. The learning possibilities are endless.
