My Students

I teach AP Physics and Chemistry and the lack of hands-on labs last year hurt my students' progress toward understanding immensely. My students are curious and inquisitive and the use of hands-on labs is their favorite way of interacting with each other and the knowledge they crave.

My Project

The wireless probes requested in this project will be used in my physics and chemistry classes to collect data for further analysis to support the Nevada Academic Content Standards in science. The content standards in science require my students to use crosscutting concepts to better understand the world around them. Collecting data, looking for patterns, and creating models based on those patterns requires the students to use mathematical concepts to understand and explain scientific phenomena.

In chemistry the students investigate why chemical reactions release and absorb energy (state science standard HS-PS-4).

The temperature probes in this project will allow the students to quantify the amount of energy released or absorbed by a given reaction. In physics students are asked to investigate how forces interact to affect the motion of an object or system (HS-PS2-1) and the force and motion sensors will allow them to collect data to describe the forces on and the subsequent motion of an object.
