Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am teaching a second grade special education class in a high-need community school in NY. This is my second year as an educator and I am learning from previous mistakes.

During my first year as a teacher, I am sad to say, science was a subject that I really did not make fun for the children. My science instruction consisted mostly of read-alouds and question and answer sessions. Somehow, SOME of the children were able to retain some of the information - enough to pass end-of-unit science tests.

This year though, I want to make science a fun learning experience - something memorable for ALL of my students, not just the auditory learners. I remember science as something that sparked my interest in reading when I was a child and I would love to pass my love of science onto these children. One way that I would like to do this is by making Science much more interactive. I would like to have the students explore geology, see how tadpoles change into frogs, how plants grow, and how wheels and axles work firsthand. It is a very different experience when you are told something and when you actually participate in it. In order to accomplish this goal, unfortunately, we would need some materials that we currently do not have.

This is where you could make a difference. These children would benefit greatly from receiving a good scientific base that could spread out to other areas (reading, writing, and social studies). Having this project funded would mean the world to these children, as using the materials would probably be the highlight of their days in school. Thank you so much for your help with this project! Without the help of donors like you, projects like this one would probably never come to life in the classroom.
