This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach both 4th and 5th grade students. I have about 300 students in my classes. Our first unit is on matter and I would like to include as many labs as I can to get students curious about the world around them. This includes looking at chemical and physical reactions, mixtures, solutions, conductivity and solubility. The problem is that most stuff is consumable. Scotch tape goes so fast in this class when building models.

Matter is everything around us from food to mixtures.

We will be using a lot of everyday items to see how reactions can occur, like yeast and peroxide, what types of materials are soluble (honey, salt, sugar), and using that information to draw conclusions about how matter works. We need containers to hold them such as cups and ones with lids. We also will use kisses for measurement and change of matter (like melting), starburst for rock cycles, and gum drops to model chemical compounds. We will use antacid tablets (alka seltzer) to look at rate of dissolving.

Lastly, students go through a lot of copies for them to do worksheets and ink for the printer would be a great help.
