Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine getting all of your meals at school due to poverty? 90% of my students are on free/reduced lunch, with many being recent immigrants and one being homeless. In addition to struggles with basic reading and math, only 20% of them passed the last district science exam.

Despite the many challenges they face, my students are a wonderful, resilient bunch of learners.

Our school is a Title I school and serves a high risk population across the board. However, they have already progressed tremendously this year, and have especially gravitated toward science lessons. So far in science, we have learned about pendulums and gravity, the solar system, the scientific process, food webs, variables, and ecology. This OMSI science camp would allow them to take their learning to the next level.

My Project

Going to the OMSI science camp would enrich my students' lives in many ways. None of them have ever been to an outdoor learning camp before, and few have ever even left the Portland metro region. In addition, they would learn real world lessons about the science we have touched on in class. At the camp, we will learn about subjects in ecology, biology, and geology. The students will take part in experiments and hands-on lessons in a natural environment that they have never experienced before. Because our school is required to focus most attention on reading and math, students get very limited science instruction. This makes attending OMSI's camp even more important, as it will help them catch up with their peers at more affluent schools and across the globe.

While this camp would be valuable to any child, for my students, it could be life-changing.

To experience nature firsthand, to learn from experts, to discover their potential as future scientists - all of these things would impact them powerfully, in a way I could not duplicate in the classroom. Upon their return, students would be able to share their new knowledge with their families and communities, multiplying the effect of the camp many times over. Please support this important project!
