My Students

Houston ISD is a large urban school district with a very diverse student population. Our high school draws students from all over the district. We specifically focus on getting students to improve their STEM skills by having a strong focus on Engineering, Science, and Math.

At EIHS, we use project based learning to give our students an opportunity to experience their subjects with hands-on activities.

This develops our students' inventive skills, challenging them to develop experiments and projects using their own unique experiences and knowledge.

EIHS is currently in it's 5th year. I am in my first year here. Physics was taught at EIHS for the first time last year and I am the first teacher dedicated strictly to teaching physics. I therefore am in need of lab equipment to help my students experience the laws of physics with current technology.

My Project

Understanding the laws of physics requires being able to visualize and practice with actual examples of what is going on in the real world. It is important to back up the math of physics with physical examples of how the laws work.

The equipment in this request will help my students have the opportunity to experience the laws of physics involved with rotational movement and projectile motion.

While using the equipment, they will need to apply the mathematical formulas in order to project the outcomes of experiments before they actually run the final test. This reinforces both their understanding of the math behind the physical laws AND their abilities to perform science through valid experimental techniques.

These materials are focused on 2 particular topics in the physics curriculum:

1) The Projectile Launcher will help students learn how to calibrate a launching device and calculate projectile motion. They will follow this with a group project to build their own device which can be calibrated to hit a target.

2) The Centripetal Force Apparatus and Rotating platform will will give them experience with angular motion and momentum. The first of these will help them collect data on forces as objects go around curves. A project will follow on how roads or amusement parks use "banking" to make turns safer. The rotating table will allow students to experience centripetal force directly by using bicycle wheel gyroscopes (which I already have) to see how forces from the spinning wheel can cause them to rotate on the table.

The Vernier GoLinks are parts required to allow the students to hook the electronic tools directly to their Laptops in order to collect data.
