A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I have a class of 28 outstanding students. They all come from different backgrounds, but all strive to do their best when in school. COVID-19 has impacted this group of students I'm teaching today tremendously. This group of students were sent home during their first year of school and asked to learn their last school term at home. This group also spent their first-grade year wearing masks, learning from home, and catching up on the time they missed in kindergarten. Even this year, we find ourselves in unchartered waters as we deal with Omicron. We just spent the past five days at home in quarantine due to numbers being too high. No matter the situation, these students have endured and continue to show their grit as 2nd graders. We have a long road ahead of us to close the gaps, but I know this group can do it! I plan on using the supplies that I receive from this project to support my tier 2 and 3 students in reading and math centers.
My Project
These hands on manipulatives will allow my students the opportunity to see these math and literacy standards in a different way. Each student has their own way in connecting with what is being taught to them. I want to provide my students with differentiated instruction to meet their diverse needs when mastering these concepts.
These students are behind and have not been able to master these concepts given the instruction they've been provided.
My goal is for these manipulatives to give them a different opportunity to understand the concepts being taught. Some students learn more effectively by the use of their hands. For example, the base ten blocks will allow students to break apart a number when learning how to borrow or carry. These manipulatives can give them the visual and manipulation they may need to understand the concept.
