My Students

Can you imagine trying to understand College level chemistry without hands-on laboratory experiments? This is what my students are facing. Most of the labs my students are required to complete for AP Chemistry require a balance with .001g accuracy, which we do not have.

Our school is in a rural location.

We are in a high poverty area, with 72% of our students requiring free or reduced lunch. Many of these students have never been out of the area. They come from families that rarely graduate college. Some do not even have parents that have graduated high school. These students are exceptionally bright and highly motivated to achieve. They spend many hours studying as well as being involved in extra-curricular activities. They are committed to their education.

My Project

AP course have requirements set forth by the college board. For AP Chemistry, we are required to complete 22 experiments in the laboratory. These experiments allow the students to see these concepts in real life. Some of the experiments we will be able to complete with this electronic balance include; Determination of the Empirical Formula of Silver Oxide, Determination of Mass and Mole Relationship in a Chemical Reaction, Determination of Molar Mass by Freezing Point Depression and many others.

Some of these students may be the first in their family to go to college.

Many of these students have expressed a desire to go to Medical School, and other areas where chemistry will be vital to their education. An investment in this balance is an investment in the future. Not only will these students benefit, but so will future Chemistry students and many of my other students in Physics and Physical Science classes that I also teach.
