My Students

I work with a great group of students every day at a rural K-12 school. The majority of the parents and community are very supportive, and many of the students do a great job of encouraging and mentoring the younger students. I see my students being successful in many things outside of the classroom such as sports, jobs, and extracurricular organizations. They are very excited about these things and work hard to achieve their goals. I would like to see the same level of effort in my mathematics classroom.

Students really enjoy doing hands-on activities in the classroom; they can see more value in what they are doing and love being able to move around while doing mathematics.

Many of the students have parents that have hands-on jobs such as farming and mechanics. They see the value of working with their hands but cannot always see the connection with how math can help them do some of these things. I am hoping to bring more opportunities to my students to help them see why math is valuable and useful beyond school.

My Project

My students really enjoy hands-on activities in the classroom. They like to be moving around and seeing how the mathematics they are learning can be applied to the world around them. "When am I going to use this?" is a question that most teachers, especially math teachers, hear. Incorporating more of these activities will help my students see the answer to this question and allow them to take charge of their own learning in an interactive way.

The students in my classroom need tools to enable them to participate in the hands-on activities that will make mathematics instruction in my classroom more interactive.

Two activities that I have already done with my students in geometry involved measuring distances and angles to use trigonometry to determine the heights and lengths of objects that could not be measured by hand (height of the school for instance) and also determine the details of a fabricated crime scene. In both instances, we discovered that it was very difficult to take accurate measurements using only yard and meter sticks. The tape measures I am requesting will allow us to measure distances much more quickly and accurately. Many of my students did not have calculators to help them solve for the missing information once they had their measurements and written their equations, so I have also requested a few calculators for those students to use. The remaining supplies requested will be used to build 3D models to represent geometrical shapes, set up experiments to collect data to create graphs and other mathematical models, and other STEM inspired activities. My students have really enjoyed the interactive lessons I have been able to provide for them so far, and they would really appreciate your support so they can continue to explore mathematics in an interactive way.
