First grade is a time when building mathematical numeracy is invaluable. If they do not have a firm grasp on numbers and counting now, math will be very hard for them in the future. I teach first grade at a high-need elementary charter school that just opened it's doors to 150 Kindergarten and First grade students here in New York City! Our school will eventually grow to serve students in Kindergarten - Fifth grade. One of only six charter schools in our New York City borough, we are on the progressive forefront of education in our district.

Because our school is brand new, we've had to start building our classrooms from scratch. One-by-one new furniture, books, and supplies have been arriving, but there is little room in our small charter school budget for extra, yet vital, materials that will help my students build the mathematical skills they need.

My classroom is in great need of math manipulatives. These supplies include plastic money, linking and unifix cubes, pattern blocks, counters, and supplies for math centers. Without these supplies it is almost impossible to have students explore number values and patterns in mathematical thinking. Especially at such a young age, first graders need hands-on materials to build numeracy.

With your kind donation, you will make it possible for my students to have hands-on mathematical experiences, explore their learning in individual and group settings, and help jump start a rising star in the charter school world!
