LHES is a large elementary school located near the center of the city. Our students come from diverse economic backgrounds and cultures. Many of our students come from single parent homes. 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and snack.
My students are young children and need support with hands on materials for math.
Many of the children come from lower socioeconomic homes, but they are always ready to learn and show what they know. They are happy to be in school and try their best every single day.
My Project
When I got my position at this school, my classroom was the extra classroom. Therefore, there were no math manipulatives. For three years, I have been scrounging for and borrowing supplies from other classrooms. My students this year and for years to come deserve to have a dedicated set of manipulatives they can use to help them learn early math concepts.
Young children need to have access to manipulatives to help them make learning math concepts more concrete.
The supplies I have chosen meet the Common Core Standards. I have carefully selected each item. Each item will be utilized in class almost every day. The linking cubes will help students to learn addition and subtraction concepts. The base ten blocks will help the students to gain an understanding of our base ten number system. The clocks will be used in centers and during calendar time. The dice will be used almost daily as students learn subitizing and play addition and subtraction games. The dominoes also help students to learn subitizing and addition concepts. The balance will be used to help students understand the concept of the equal sign. In first grade, students are required to learn and understand what the equal sign mean no matter where it appears in an equation. That is a really hard concept for them. I've found that using a balance really helps them to understand this.
